The Color Purple

It’s been awhile, but I’m participating in Six Word Fridays. The prompt: purple. I took for inspiration one of the main characters of my novel, and wrote from his point-of-view, in his universe.

Purple is the color of fear.

It’s the shade of the bruise

beneath his eye and the sky

as he runs out of breath.

It tints the tips of trees

wine-red and stains the shadows

underfoot. It cobwebs under his skin,

mapping the veins of his gripped

hands. His fingertips swell and tingle

as the blood in the arteries

of his pumping arms collide with

his clenched fists.
