This arrived in the mail. The Nielsen Survey has recognized my excellent taste in TV and humbly desires to glean my opinion…by taking note of everything I watch. Oh, the responsibility, it boggles my brain. But I’m ready. I’m willing. And I have so much to tell them. In fact, you could say I’ve been preparing for this moment my whole opinionated,  TV-viewing life.

Which reminds me: Happy TV Premiere Week, all! For more Wordful Wednesday goodness, visit:

  1. How do you get one of those? I’ve always wondered. The Nielson ratings….but WHO are those people and WHERE do they live? I’ve never known anyone to ever have one!! Now I do. I hope you keep us all filled in!

    • Honestly, I have no idea how you get one. Maybe it’s like jury duty…just just get lucky/unlucky. I just hope to do my part for the TV viewing public. 😉

  2. Are you going for it? I think it would be fun to be a Nielson family, except for the part where you have to track what each individual family member watches in 15-minute increments. At least that’s what I remember. For a two-person family, where hubby and I usually watch the same thing, I could handle it, but for your family, I can’t even imagine the record keeping. Maybe you’ll get lucky and they’ll send you one of those handy-dandy boxes that will record it all for you. Good luck!

    • Uh oh. I assumed they’d give me a box. I hope I don’t have to record it all myself! We don’t let the kids watch too much TV, but hubs and I watch mostly different things, so it’d be a mess! I’ll keep you posted on how it goes!

    • Well, the Nielson Survey is often quoted and used by networks to determine the viewing rankings of shows…what shows are doing well, which should be canceled, etc (not the only factor, of course), etc and I’ve always wanted MY viewing choices recorded. ‘Nielson homes’ are picked randomly, I think, and I’ve never done it before. We’ll see how it goes.

  3. Can I get a “Woot, woot!” for House, Castle, Glee, and Bones??

And until not that long ago, I will admit, I was always afraid to miss a favorite show, lest the Nielseners not count my vote. My Husband the Technology Guy had to tell me that there isn’t a magic switch in all televisions that the Nielsen people constantly monitor, as I had naively thought. Then I thought about how Big Brother that actually would be and wasn’t quite so disappointed. =>

    • Wouldn’t that be awesome? (Except for the big brother part, of course.) I’ll do my best to represent only the good stuff. We always watch Glee and Bones in this house, but I’ve only watched House and Castle occasionally. Might have to rectify that. OMG…I’m going to be watching TV 24/7 just to make sure I don’t leave out any good shows! I guess I gotta do what I gotta do.

  4. Ooooh! I remember the day I first learned about the Nielsen ratings in my first journalism class, Media and Society. So far, only surveys for me. But I’ve dreamed of this, the Big Brother version! Until cable is available in my area, I don’t think I have a chance. Make sure to watch all the good shoes, okay? 🙂

    • Well, we don’t subscribe to the zillion channel cable package, so that may eliminate us as well. I hope not though. So far, we seem to qualify. And I’ll make sure to watch all good shoes and shows. Or maybe there’s shows about shoes? 😉

  5. Awesome! Michael has been looking forward to this week…it is ‘audition week’…..our chance to give the new shows a chance and see which ones make the cut……trust Mr Television to take it all very seriously! Will look forward to hearing what shows you like…..

    • Because we don’t like to give our opinions on TV…no, not at all. Send me your recs and I’ll make sure to play them even if I’m not at home! Kidding. Sort of.
